The Library

Library Whole

This impressive room fills you with a sense of wonder and inspiration. Marvel at more than 100,000 natural history books, just part of the holdings of the Linnean Society (which include library, archive and biological specimen material). The Linnean Society of London is the world’s oldest active biological society and our library at Burlington House holds a wealth of history as well as remaining an active resource for the study of nature. It is a unique and surprisingly quiet space in central London.

Popular hire uses include book launches, drinks receptions (after a lecture in our meeting room), and private tours of the collections guided by our knowledgeable staff. The library is also a popular filming location.

The engraved, glass ceiling panels allow natural light to flood into this elegant room. The classic double cube design, with majestic pillars rising to the roof and upper galleries give it a spacious feel.

Timings for hire of the library are limited as it is open to the public 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday. Catering options are also limited as we must prioritise the preservation of the collection.

A lift provides step-free access to the lower ground, ground, first, and second floors. Access to the lift requires manual door opening.

A unisex accessible toilet is on the lower ground floor, with step free access via the lift. It does not require a RADAR key. Other toilet facilities are available on multiple levels.

Our historic building features six stone steps leading up to our entrance. We have a portable ramp that staff will be very happy to place to assist entry and exit from the building when a need is identified.

Our location inside a 19th century listed building presents several challenges as regards physical accessibility some of which are summarised here. We recognise that our visitors have different needs, and our staff are here to support you. If there are adjustments we can make ahead of your visit—or you have any questions about access—please do not hesitate to get in touch.
