Our Journals

The Linnean Society of London publishes peer-reviewed scientific journals in biology, botany, zoology and evolutionary study.

The Society's journals (Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, Evolutionary Journal of the Linnean Society, and Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society) cover original scientific papers and studies, and are published on the Society's behalf by Oxford University Press (OUP).

The Society’s journals are core to our history and help us to develop and share the latest in scientific research from all over the world. Covering all aspects of taxonomy from species both alive and extinct, our journals are unique in publishing on specialist topics, encompassing contemporary issues like climate change, adaptive radiation, organismal resilience and more.

Our longest standing journal, the Biological Journalis the direct descendant of the oldest biological journal in the world, famed for its epoch-defining papers on evolution by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. It specialises in evolution in the broadest sense, covering all taxonomic groups in all five kingdoms.

The Biological Journal publishes high-quality novel research of biological significance in possible fields of: evolutionary, ecology, palaeontology, genetics, genomics, and cell, conservation, developmental, molecular, organismal, and systems biology. We are also especially keen to encourage submissions on the impact of contemporary climate change on biodiversity & its evolution.

The Zoological Journalpublishes high-quality papers on systematic and evolutionary zoological research of species both alive and extinct, as well as comparative, functional and other studies relevant to these areas. The journal operates on an online-only continuous publication format, with the inclusion of open-access papers.

The Zoological Journal is highly ranked in journals of zoological research in the world, showing our commitment to publishing ground-breaking and high-quality papers across the field of zoology.

The Botanical Journalpublishes high-quality original papers relating to the biology of both plants and fungi. It was first published in 1856, evolving from Transactions, which published early papers by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace.

The scope of articles published in the Botanical Journal includes but is not limited to botany, climate change, comparative biology, ecology, evolutionary biology, mycology, phylogenetic inference, plant sciences and systematics. The journal also welcomes papers that utilise different techniques & fields of enquiry, as well as those that show the systematic implications of comparative work. It particularly encourages paper integrated across fields, where these comparisons have significance for plant evolution more broadly, as well as the use of novel methodologies.

The Evolutionary Journalis the Society’s newest journal, officially launching as a fully open-access journal in 2022. It rapidly publishes high-quality open-access original papers on all aspects of the evolutionary biology of diverse organisms and ecological systems.

Submissions are encouraged across disciplinary divides, from genetics, palaeontology and systematics to behaviour. All papers that address evolutionary questions using the latest technologies & analytical advances will be considered. This includes genomics & other high-throughput omics technologies, as well as advances in morphometric & morphological studies.

The Evolutionary Journal particularly welcomes papers addressing genomic diversity and how this insight relates to intriguing ecological and evolutionary phenomena in any organismal group, at any scale.

Developing Countries Offer

To ensure that non-profit research institutions in Low- and Middle-Income Countries have access to critical research, Oxford University Press (OUP) participates in several free or heavily reduced-rate access initiatives such as INASP, EIFL, and Research4Life as part of OUP’s Developing Countries Offer.

Free or heavily discounted access to selected resources is available to established not-for-profit educational institutions from qualifying countries. If you think your institution may qualify, please consider applying for discounted access to our journals and online products. You can find out more about OUP’s Developing Countries Offer on their website.

Investing in our Community

The Linnean Society is committed to publishing high-quality and ground breaking scientific research across the four themes of botany, zoology, biology and evolution. We strive to make the work published in our journals accessible and engaging to a global audience.

As a not-for-profit organisation, the income generated from our journals is used to fund our charitable endeavours and community engagement. Most notably this is through our historical collections, extensive education and events programmes, and our prestigious medals, prizes and awards.
