Drawing Nature: Structure and Surface
This one-day workshop covers how to approach drawing fauna by considering their structure and surfaces.

This course is for adults and is suitable for beginners and for those wanting to refresh their skills.
There will be a maximum of eight participants with one tutor so that individual attention can be given.
All materials will be provided, although participants are encouraged to bring their own if they have them.

Phyla is the way animals are considered in regards to their overall body structure – how many parts make up the whole, how the parts join and their skeleton/ exoskeleton. Surfaces include hair, scales, fur and spines while textures are smooth, spikey, scaled, feathered, hairy, furry and leather.
The day is divided into two parts: a workshop exploring materials and approach at The Linnean Society and a trip to the nearby Grant Museum to record their specimens on display.
This workshop is part of a series and can be done individually or in combination with the other workshops and is suitable for a range of abilities from beginners upwards.
This class costs £45 and is open to all.
- Registration is essential to secure your place.
- Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Doors will open at 9.45 and the workshops will begin at 10.00.
- Basic materials, as well as teas and coffees, will be provided.
- The workshops include an hour lunch break. Participants are encouraged to take their lunch outside the Society as there are no convenient facilities for eating - the Discovery Room itself is home to some of the Society's unique historical collections.

About the facilitator
Stephen Hall is a research graduate from The Royal College of Art, underpinning a 20-year studio practice delivering a range of various disciplines including graphic design, illustration, animation, interactive design to international and national clients. Complementing this has been an equally impressive educational career lecturing and teaching across various renowned UK colleges and universities. Drawing sits at the heart of his all his work.
