This course is for adults and is suitable for beginners and for those wanting to refresh their skills.

There will be a maximum of eight participants with one tutor so that individual attention can be given.
All materials will be provided, although participants are encouraged to bring their own if they have them.

Cutting a Floral Pattern

This is an opportunity to mix paper cutting and collage techniques to craft eye-catching artworks based on images from the natural world. Use both cutting and layering techniques to combine colour and line to stunning effect.

This workshop is one of a three part series with Jessica Palmer, which can each be done individually, and is suitable for all abilities.

Techniques explored:

working with scissors, layering, colour palettes, how different papers work together, framing and mounting devices, positive and negative space, paper cutting patterns to create texture, interpreting images, seeing the world as a paper cutter, silhouettes, concertina books, cast shadow and using light, cutting text, staining and hand-painting paper, using recycled papers, mixed media and more.

This class costs £50 and is open to all.

  • Registration is essential to secure your place.
  • Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Doors will open at 9.45 and the workshops will begin at 10.00.
  • Basic materials, as well as teas and coffees, will be provided.
  • The workshops include an hour lunch break. Participants are encouraged to take their lunch outside the Society as there are no convenient facilities for eating - the Discovery Room itself is home to some of the Society's unique historical collections.

About the facilitator

Jessica Palmer

Jessica Palmer, author of The Art of Papercutting (Search Press) 2015, is a paper passionista! - widely known for her paper cuts and collages which tell stories about people’s lives. Much of Jessica’s artwork is inspired by conservation, nature, gardens and history. Jessica also makes 3D paper sculptures.
