Cutting a Floral Pattern

Choosing your favourite nature images, learn how to 'paint with paper' and use a range of papery materials to create exquisite paper mosaics of plants, birds, flowers, trees or insects. Mary Delany, the 18th century inventor of collage and expert botanist, will be inspiring us in spirit!

This workshop is one of a three part series with Jessica Palmer, which can each be done individually, and is suitable for all abilities.

Techniques explored:

working with scissors, layering, colour palettes, how different papers work together, framing and mounting devices, positive and negative space, paper cutting patterns to create texture, interpreting images, seeing the world as a paper cutter, silhouettes, concertina books, cast shadow and using light, cutting text, staining and hand-painting paper, using recycled papers, mixed media and more.

This class costs £50 and is open to all.

  • Registration is essential to secure your place.
  • Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Doors will open at 9.45 and the workshops will begin at 10.00.
  • Basic materials, as well as teas and coffees, will be provided.
  • The workshops include an hour lunch break. Participants are encouraged to take their lunch outside the Society as there are no convenient facilities for eating - the Discovery Room itself is home to some of the Society's unique historical collections.
