FIELD TRIP  Friday 10 – Sunday 12 August 2018

© Field Studies Council

In association with the Field Studies Council, we are a hosting a three day marine themed field trip, in August, on the Isle of Cumbrae, Millport analysing the local ecology.

During your two-night stay at the Field Studies Council’s centre in Millport you will study the fauna and flora of Kames Bay, one of two SSSI’s on the island, conducting transects from the strandline right down to the low tide line. This site is of special interest as it is fed by freshwater seepage from the surrounding land, and we will look at the important implications for the site’s intertidal zone and animals. A variety of different salinity profiles exist within the sand, resulting in organisms more typical of estuarine conditions. We will collect samples to analyse/ ID at the laboratory.

You will undertake a trip aboard our research vessel R.V. Actinia around the coastal waters of the island to measure water parameters, including salinity, temperature and chlorophyll content, and undertake surface plankton sampling to collect zoo and phytoplankton to be analysed in the laboratory later.

You will have the opportunity to participate in a guided tour of the Robertson Museum and Aquarium (onsite) and to visit Ballochmartin, the second SSSI on the island to look at the wide variety of coastal birds.

The cost is £260 and is based on arrival 1700, with dinner at 1800. Accommodation is in shared twin en-suite accommodation (single room occupancy subject to availability – additional charge incurred).

Full cooked breakfast, packed lunches and two course evening meals included in the price.

Departure: Sunday 12th August at midday.

Please note: The cost doesn’t include transport to Millport. There is a train station in Largs and the ferry to Millport is about a 2 minute walk from Largs train station. During the summer months the ferry is every fifteen minutes. The service bus meets the ferry and takes about 4 minutes. Both ferry and bus cost around £3.
