5-DAY ART COURSE 10:00 - 16:00, Monday 21st - Friday 25th October 2019

This course is for adults and is suitable for beginners and for those wanting to refresh their skills.

There will be a maximum of eight participants with one tutor so that individual attention can be given.
All materials will be provided, although participants are encouraged to bring their own if they have them.

Stephen's last workshop - Gain Confidence in Drawing

This week-long course will provide participants with a broad introduction to drawing nature. Please see the schedule below for a full content overview.

In short, the course will cover how to draw nature with greater accuracy, how colour can better understood and employed to give your drawing impact, how to draw beyond the confines of traditional representation and material, how to draw flora and fauna from observation and landscape drawing and how to approach and make a detailed finished drawing.


SCHEDULE:

Day 1 - Accuracy, Proportion and Scale

Explore various techniques to improve how to draw nature with greater accuracy. Positioning, Scale, Ratio, Proportion are all covered along with materials and other considerations, which facilitate drawing with greater confidence. A series of tasks and exercises will be complimented by feedback and discussion.


Day 2 - Drawing with Colour

Explore how colour can better understood and employed to give your drawing impact. Explore and understand colour from a scientific and emotional perspective. Work with a range of materials (both dry and wet) and techniques, which will extend your ability to draw more confidently with colour. A series of tasks and exercises will be complimented by feedback and discussion. This workshop is part of a series and can be done individually or in combination with the other workshops and is suitable for a range of abilities from beginners upwards.


Day 3 - Emotional and Experimental Drawing

Use ideas and methods covered in the workshop to open up, extend and challenge your own ideas about the act of drawing. A series of tasks and exercises will be complimented by feedback and discussion. This workshop is part of a series and can be done individually or in combination with the other workshops and is suitable for a range of abilities from beginners upwards.


Day 4 - Field Trip (Hampstead Heath/Grant Museum)*

Learn a variety of methods and approaches to support a range of drawing intentions- from research and sketching, detailed recording and capturing movements and ‘the moment’. A set of tasks and outcomes will be complimented by feedback and discussion.


Day 5 – Applied Drawing with Detail

Explore the use of preparatory and support sketches, composition, focal points and rendering techniques to support fine detailed outcomes. Participants can draw from a selection of provided natural objects or bring their own.

* The order of these days may be altered to give the best chance of good weather on the Field Trip

This 5-day course costs £225 and is open to all.

  • Registration is essential to secure your place.
  • Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • This course is not available as individual classes. Please look at the full listing of workshops to see individual classes.
  • Doors will open at 9.45 and the workshops will begin at 10.00.
  • Basic materials, as well as teas and coffees, will be provided.
  • The workshops include an hour lunch break. Participants are encouraged to take their lunch outside the Society as there are no convenient facilities for eating - the Discovery Room itself is home to some of the Society's unique historical collections.

About the facilitator

Stephen Hall

Stephen Hall is a research graduate from The Royal College of Art, underpinning a 20-year studio practice delivering a range of various disciplines including graphic design, illustration, animation, interactive design to international and national clients. Complementing this has been an equally impressive educational career lecturing and teaching across various renowned UK colleges and universities. Drawing sits at the heart of his all his work.
