ONLINE LUNCHTIME LECTURE 12.30–13:00 WEDNESDAY, 10 FEBRUARY 2021
The contributions of non-professionals to our understanding of nature have a long and fascinating history. More recently, 'citizen science' has shown a remarkable increase across the world, with public participation in scientific research growing exponentially. In this talk, Dr Suhel Quader will explore the growth and promise of citizen science for natural history and conservation in the Global South, drawing on our work in India. Enabling factors, such as the internet and mobile devices, are tempered by constraints that include language and uneven access to technology. He will describe the progress we have made so far, and sketch out a vision of a stronger, more diverse and more effective citizen science for the future.
Dr Quader works for India-based Nature Conservation Foundation, whose goal is to contribute to the knowledge and conservation of India’s unique wildlife heritage with innovative research and imaginative solutions. Dr Quader's formal background and training is in animal behaviour and evolutionary ecology but his main interest is in engaging with the larger public in better understanding the natural world and how it is changing.
