Bookplates of Botanists
Bookplates (Ex Libris) of Botanists
Speakers: Tony Pincott (Treasurer & Membership Secretary, The Bookplate Society) and Dr John Edmondson (Hon. Research Associate, R.B.G. Kew)
An illustrated talk on the marks of ownership used by Fellows of the Society & other Botanists on their books.
Topics to be discussed include the ownership marks employed by pre-Linnean botanists; those of Linnaeus and his followers; the Founder of the Linnean Society of London, Sir James Edward Smith and his circle; Victorian botanists; Continental botanists' plates; 20th century bookplates; and a few modern examples. We will discuss why some of our most famous naturalists did not apparently employ Ex Libris plates, and tell how the chosen designs, flowers (and cats) reveal something of the book owners' personalities and predilections.
This meeting is free and open to all; registration is not necessary.
This is a joint meeting with the Bookplate Society.
