

The Linnean Society of London's 222nd Anniversary Meeting 201003-06-10 16:16 Age: 98 days
The 222nd Anniversary Meeting took place on Monday 24th May 2010. The Society was very pleased to admit six Fellows, to elect a new Foreign Member and to make awards to a number of distinguished biologists.

Following a welcome from the President, the formal business began with the ballot for the election of Fellows, Council, Officers, and a Foreign Member. The Officers then read citations and the President made awards to Professor Dianne Edwards (Linnean Medal for Botany), Dr Derek Yalden (Linnean Medal for Zoology), Professor Brian Charlesworth (Darwin-Wallace Medal), Dr Beverley Glover (Bicentenary Medal), Dr Christopher Thorogood (Irene Manton Prize) and to Mrs Susan Sex (Jill Smythies Award for botanical illustration).
The Treasurer, Professor Gren Lucas gave a presentation on the Society’s financial position and the Fellows accepted the Accounts for 2009. For his address to mark the end of his first year as President of the Society, Dr Vaughan Southgate chose the topic “Schistosomiasis and environmental change” In this address he discussed the effects of environmental changes in Sengal on the epidemiology of schistosomiasis and the prevalence and intensity of infection. This lecture is now available as a podcast.
Following the tellers report, Dr Sofia Stepanjants was elected to the Society as a Foreign Member. The Treasurer (Professor Gren Lucas), the Botanical Secretary (Dr Sandra Knapp), the Zoological Secretary (Dr Malcolm Scoble), the Collections Secretary (Mrs Susan Gove) and the Editorial Secretary (Dr John Edmondson) were all re-elected to their present positions.
Dr Southgate nominated Dr Michael Fay, Dr Keith Maybury, Dr Sandra Knapp and Dr Malcolm Scoble as his Vice-Presidents.
There were a number of changes to the membership of Council. Thanks were extended to six Council members, Professor Pieter Baas, Professor Richard Bateman, Dr Andrew Brown, Dr John David, Dr Max Telford and Professor Patricia Willmer. Professor Geoffrey Boxshall, Professor Mark Chase, Professor Dianne Edwards, Mr Alastair Land, Mr Brian Livingstone and Ms Sara Oldfield were elected to serve on the Council.
