Linnean Society Tours

Tour our Collections

Please be sure to contact us as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment.

Linn butterfly blue_Linn toursOur library and collections are the heart of the Linnean Society, and wherever possible we offer tours to interested groups. Academic groups, universities and those interested in the art of natural history will all find a visit to the Society a beneficial experience. Are you a sixth form teacher looking for an outing to a site of biological interest? Why not consider the Linnean Society's important historical collection. PGCE students may also find the tour a useful addition to their knowledge when choosing a scientist for 'Science Week'. And we offer a warm welcome to Swedish visitors interested in learning more about their national hero.

Our tours can take in just the history of the Society, the Linnaean Collections, or both. Tours last 45 minutes, though times may vary for larger groups. At busier times of year we would appreciate your flexibility with the times available to give tours; all tours are subject to staff availability. Tours can be arranged Monday to Friday, 10.00-17.00 (excluding Bank Holidays and the period between Christmas and New Year).

Our tours are open to any group with an interest in Carl Linnaeus or natural history. Academics, researchers, botanical and zoological illustrators - all are welcome. Due to the nature of our collections and the size of our collections store, we can only offer tours to groups aged 16 and up.

Group size

Our collections store is small and, in order to preserve the specimens, temperature and humidity-controlled so we can only accept groups of up to 30 people. Please note that any groups over 15 will be separated into two groups on the day of your visit. Teachers: for school groups of over 15 people please make sure that you include the requisite number of staff (at least two) in your party.
